Clearing Dawn

Premiering in 2014 at New York City Ballet’s annual Fall Fashion Gala, Clearing Dawn paired choreographer Troy Schumacher with fashion designer Thom Browne to devise this new ballet. As the costume shopper, my role was to source the various fabrics and notions necessary; in particular, I had to find a wool suiting fabric which would function with the dancers’ movements.

From The New York Times : “Clearing Dawn [is] beautifully set to the varied meters and orchestral colors of Judd Greenstein’s “Clearing, Dawn, Dance.” Its six dancers became the most youthfully innocent and playful characters all evening (an aspect memorably heightened by the cutely chic preteenage gray-and-white school uniforms by Thom Browne). But they were also the most modern, believable, dancey and convincingly complex. The choreography’s striking changes of mood kept giving them depth, energy, surprise.” Photo above © Driely S. for Racked.
